The value of preventive care
08 Sep 2021
Prevention is better than cure, so the adage goes. With chronic disease on the rise, the role that preventive healthcare can play in our lives has never been more important. While it is difficult to estimate how many deaths each year are preventable, chronic diseases alone are estimated to be responsible for almost 41 million premature deaths worldwide.
Annual check-ups, immunisations, screenings and flu shots are just some examples of preventive care. Screening tests can help detect health risks early on, which allows your doctor to recommend treatment options that can be as simple as eating more nutritious meals and exercising for no more than 30 minutes a day.
In the UAE, there is a number of preventative health campaigns targeted towards the most common diseases and illnesses. The Ministry of Health and Prevention has a host of initiatives covering the early detection of hypertension disorders and cardiovascular diseases, obesity in children, general health and more.
Preventive care takes minimal time and effort and can have maximum impact on your life in the future. During the era of the Covid-19 pandemic, billions of people have acknowledged this fact by taking the vaccine and protecting themselves and others from potential harm. This is an opportunity for all of us to undertake our own personal health check and identify simple but effective measures to maintain our wellbeing.
